So you want to save on gas?

Relax. There is something you can do.

Follow the formula:

10 + 10 = 20

What does that mean?

Simple. Drive 10% less and drive 10% slower to save 20% on fuel.

Hard? Not really. Anybody can figure out how to drive a bit less. Just cut out a few trips. Drive slower? Easy too, like going 65 instead of 75 on the freeway. Are you going to be late? Unlikely. Driving slower only makes a few minutes difference. And you have more time to listen to some nice music…

If everybody in America follows 10 + 10 = 20, we’ll save millions of barrels of oil per day!

What else can I do to save on gas?

1. First follow the formula 10 + 10 = 20.

2. When you are ready to buy a new car, get one that is a lot more fuel efficient than your current one. Like twice as much! It may have to be smaller, though. Ah well….

After you get your hands on a fuel sipper, you can blast away again!

3. Don’t overbuy. Buy the minimum size vehicle that you can live with. Don’t get a vehicle that is big when bigness is not needed a lot. For instance, a while ago I took my children on a camping trip to the desert. Could it be done without owning an SUV? Yes! I rented an SUV. Likewise, when I go skiing in the mountains, I just take my car. No SUV needed. If it snows, I put snowchains on and that’s it. Need to haul stuff? Get it delivered or borrow your cousin’s pickup.

4. Don’t brake. Well, you should see the horror on my wife’s face when I say that. But, seriously. Anticipate instead of react. And keep distance.

5. What else can I do? Well, to pay for fuel you can always stop smoking, stop drinking or stop buying organic food….

So true. If everybody cuts back a little, it adds up to millions of barrels and oil prices will have to go down, saving everybody money, right?

  2. Paula James Says:

I’ve already started to drive slower, but this formula 10 + 10 = 20 is a really neat way to think about it. So, yeah. Count me in. I will forward this to my friends. I want everybody to save 20% gas by driving a bit less and by driving a bit slower.

Hey, thanks for responding. I found it’s really not hard when you try it: drive less and drive slower and you’ll save a lot of gas. Remember: 10+10=20
